Earlier this year, the Pentagon was required to get rid of its prohibition on openly serving gays for eight days after a federal judge in California ordered the armed forces to do so. The Justice Department has requested and a federal appeals court granted a temporary stay of the injunction (Gays in the Military Study: Most U.S. Troops, Families Say Gays OK, 2010).
